Bikram Yoga [Feb. 12th, 2008|02:54 pm]

I had my first Bikram Yoga experience last night. Bikram yoga is done in a 105 degree room. I started sweating before we even started! First of all the poses are probably simpler than the ones in Hatha but I found it was more difficult to stay in the poses. We held each pose for a certain amount of time and repeated it. The teacher was a drill sergeant type - he knew I was a newcomer but he kept pushing me as well as all the students.

Toward the end, I felt a little nauseated, but it passed after a moment. I was happy with myself because I only had to rest a couple times during the entire session. I think once I have money, I'd like to do it regularly.

The interesting part of this whole experience is how I came to this class. It's actually because i applied for an internship and the gallery director asked me if I wanted to meet at a yoga class after the interview. Of course, I agreed and afterwards, she mentioned it was the Bikram studio. Not just a Bikram studio, but THE Bikram studio, yes the Headquarters in LA, on La Cienega. Unfortunately the teacher wasn't Bikram-ji himself, but some little Spanish drill sergeant named Juan.

So my interview was in the lobby of the Bikram school. I'll be going to London this summer to help with the opening of their gallery there, as well as getting some gallery experience and learning more about the contemporary art scene in LA and London.

I'll be only working there once a week on Saturday, and I'll continue to teach piano part-time during the week.

I've shaved. Thought it was time for a new look. So I've been looking to buy some ray-bans and i finally chose a pair, which were given to me as a gift from my mother. they're probably the most chic thing that i've picked out in my whole life. anyway, thought you'd like to see what i look like now.

Holy moly! it's been a while since I've posted because I couldn't get into the account. Oh well. Here's a longish entry to compensate.

After nearly 2 years in Japan, I'm flying back to the U.S. tomorrow. I'll be landing at LAX November 8th.

Today we spent the day running errands around Nikko. First, I closed my bank account, then we went to lunch. After lunch we sold the car. And after the car was sold, I closed my cell phone account. After that, we went to our favorite restaurant in Nikko, Hippari Dako. The restaurant owner, Miki-san, was sad to hear that I was flying off to California tomorrow. Since it was our last dinner, it was on the house. She's very nice.

Last Sunday, Hirundo_rustica, some friends and I went to Mashiko town. Mashiko is famous for it's pottery. Due to the high quality of clay there, many ceramicists flock there to establish their studios. Below is an kiln made of dirt!

This is a giant ceramic 狸 (タヌキ) (Tanuki), the God of Restauranteurs. It looks like a badger but is in fact a type of dog!

This is my ex-branch manager, Takeshi. He's eating a skewered shitake mushroom that's been grilled and marinated in soy sauce. It was quite hot.

An ocean of ceramic-ware.

These are some various shots of different ceramics that I liked.

This is a little guy called モスモス (Mosu Mosu).

These little guys are called 地蔵 (じぞう)"Jizo" are the protectors of children. Also, they can lessen the amount of time suffering in hell. A handy little divinity.

So that was my last week in Japan.

I finally passed my driver's license test. Last time there were about 40 candidates and 1 passed. Today there were about 30 and 4 passed (Me, two Peruvians and one Brazilian). We were all very happy. One of the Peruanas actually started crying because she was so happy and because it was such a difficult process. She told me (in Spanish) she had taken the test many times before. She said this was her eigth attempt. I passed on my fourth.

When the official hands the results out first he tells (everyone) who passed and who didn't pass. He says, "Four people passed. Ichiban wa America des....Chabesu Andoryuu-san." and he proceeds to call out the 3 other people who passed. We all went to a separate window while the others got their results and re-test dates. I had to pay ¥1,800 to get my license. They take your picture and print out the license right there. Two of us don't have to display "new driver" decals on our cars because we've had our licenses for a certain length of time in our home country. So that's that. I can drive a car with an automatic transmission and a scooter smaller than 50cc's.

This is the course that foreigners have to take

Here's the view from the Menkyo Center's observation room. This is part of the actual course.

Both videos were taken upstairs in my new apartment to give you a sense of what's outside of where I live!

I'm going to tape the Shinkansen next time I have a chance. The tracks are fairly close and I haven't heard it go by once!
